The LIFE BEETLES project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, recently met with the RESCUE project — Rescue from Extinction of Endemic Species of Plants and Beetles of the Wild Islands — to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences acquired during the implementation of both projects.
The RESCUE project, coordinated by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation on the island of Madeira, aims to safeguard several unique species at risk of extinction, including the longhorn beetle of the Ilhéu de Fora (Deucalion oceanic).
Despite involving species that occupy different types of habitat, both projects have identified points in common regarding the preservation of flora and the challenges inherent in monitoring and conserving beetles in an island context.
These networking meetings are part of action E.2 – Networking, Dissemination and Transfer/Replicability. Sharing experiences and applied methodologies represents added value both for projects that are coming to an end, allowing their conservation work to be transferred or replicated, and for projects that are just starting, benefiting from the knowledge that has already been tested in the field.
