The LIFE BEETLES project recently received students from the University of Education Karlsruhe, Germany. The visit took place on the island of Pico, where the students visited the intervention areas of this project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change.
The visit began with a contextualization of the natural and geological values of the Mistรฉrio da Prainha Nature Reserve, where the LIFE BEETLES project is monitoring the possible existence of invasive species, acting early on them. It was followed by a demonstration of the methodologies used in the scientific monitoring of arthropods and the impact of conservation actions on the project’s target species.
Finally, the group of students contributed to the renaturalisation of the old pastureland of the Lagoa do Caiado, with the planting of 240 individuals of three endemic species: Short Leafed Juniper (๐๐ถ๐ฏ๐ช๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ถ๐ด ๐ฃ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ท๐ช๐ง๐ฐ๐ญ๐ช๐ข), Azorean Heather (๐๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข ๐ข๐ป๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข) and Azorean Blueberry (๐๐ข๐ค๐ค๐ช๐ฏ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ค๐บ๐ญ๐ช๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ณ๐ข๐ค๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฎ).
