Terceira Islandโs beetle, a target species of the LIFE BEETLES project, has been classified as โSlightly Depletedโ, according to the new IUCN Green Status.
This species did not have a previous classification under this Status as this is a new global assessment measure, which objective is to calculate how close a species is to being ecologically functional in the area where it lives, and how much it has recovered thanks to conservation actions.
The IUCN’s “Green Species Status” classifies species into nine categories, which indicate the extent to which they are depleted or recovered, compared to their historical population levels. The conservation measures implemented by the LIFE BEETLES project, such as the restoration of native habitats and the control of invasive flora, have accomplished good results, and the wild earth beetle (๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ค๐ฉ๐ถ๐ด ๐ต๐ฆ๐ณ๐ณ๐ข๐ฃ๐ณ๐ข๐ท๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ด๐ช๐ด) is already on the way to recovery, according to the Green Status!
