The LIFE BEETLES project carried out a direct seeding assay, in the intervention area adjacent to Lagoa do Caiado, on Pico island.
One of the objectives of this project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change, is the renaturalization of an old pasture, in a favourable habitat for Laurocho (๐๐ด๐ฆ๐ถ๐ฅ๐ข๐ฏ๐ค๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ถ๐ด ๐ข๐ฑ๐ต๐ช๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ช๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ด), the project’s target species, and other native arthropods. To this end, actions have been taken to plant endemic trees and shrubs that will enable natural succession until reaching a native forest.
These plantations are now complemented with direct sowing of Azorean Holly (๐๐ญ๐ฆ๐น ๐ข๐ป๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข) and Azorean Heather (๐๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข ๐ข๐ป๐ฐ๐ณ๐ช๐ค๐ข), in order to test the speed of their ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ด๐ช๐ต๐ถ germination. These seedbeds will be regularly monitored by the projectยดs team, in order to assess the success of germination and growth of new endemic plants.
