The directive 92/43/CEE, commonly known as Habitats Directive, is designed for the preservation of the natural habitats (terrestrial and marine) of the wild flora and fauna (terrestrial and marine) that are considered threatened, rare or vulnerable and it complements the European Community legislation Birds Directive. It foresees the creation of a network of Special Areas of conservation (SACs).
